Tyagaraja (1767–1847) was a prolific composer and one of the “Trinity of Carnatic Music” (alongside Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri). He composed thousands of devotional songs, most of them in Telugu and in praise of Lord Rama.
His contributions are still the foundation of modern Carnatic music:
• The Pancharatna Kritis: His “Five Gems” are the most famous set of compositions, often sung in chorus during the annual Tyagaraja Aradhana festival.
• Bhakti Movement: He viewed music not just as an art form, but as a path to “Moksha” (liberation) through devotion.
